Art of Living Retreat Center Shankara Ayurveda Spa

Ed Tyler, Publisher of Wellness And Medical Voyages had the opportunity to sit with Kim Ross spa director at Shankara Spa which is an Ayurvedic  Meditation and Retreat Center in Boone North Carolina  and learn about this life changing wellness center.. I think my readers learn more when they know who I am talking to.

Lets start with

How did you get involved in this industry and how did you come to be part of The Art Of Living Retreat Center?

I started in the industry in the late 80’s selling health club memberships and teaching aerobics.  My first spa job was in Tuscany, Italy for a destination spa called Spa Deus.  This was heaven on earth in that the spa experience was more than fitness.  It was nutrition, relaxation, beauty, and education.  And in Tuscany.  My career has taken me to Coolfont Resort & Spa, owned by pioneer Martha Ashelman one of the founding members of ISPA, the Sagamore Resort on Lake George, NY, a couple of Day Spas in CT, Cranwell Resrot & Spa in Lenox, MA, the Ritz-Carlton San Juan Puerto Rico where I served on the International Spa Advisory Council, was a Spa Subject Matter Expert for Marriott, and a Spa Cadre teaching the RC philosophy and assisting with hew Hotel/Spa openings.  The Roosevelt Baths & Spa in Saratoga Springs NY, and the Art of Living Retreat Center & Shankara Ayurveda Spa in Boone, NC founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.  During my career I dove into Vedic Science -Yoga, Meditation, Pranayama and Ayurveda.  I have a deep daily practice, teach, and lead Retreats.I am sure many of my readers have been to Tuscany and yes, I am sure they would like to go back again! I can see now why you were chosen to point the way at Shankara Mediation and Retreat Center. .

Lets move onto the center it’s self. Please share with us, what’s new?

We have recently implemented a R&R program that incorporates Art, Music, Movement, and Culinary Arts in addition to yoga and meditation offering a full spectrum of ways to turn a guest onto health and healing.  Our Wellness Programs that focus on Joint Rejuvenation, Sleep, Stress Reduction, and Weight Loss are now supervised by an MD in addition to an Ayurvedic Practitioner.  And in the Spring our Spa Renovation Project will be complete adding 24 additional Hotel Rooms, Studio, Demo Kitchen, Hot Tub, Exercise Pools, Flotation Tank, and Outdoor Water Gardens.I love the expansion plans both inside and outside.

What do your return members return to most?

We find that our guests who take Art of Living Programs return to take more Art of Living Programs.  Our guests that come for rejuvenation therapies and reset for digestion, tend to come back to this program yearly.  Guests who take random presenter programs and group programs tend to return for Spa Packages.
How did the The Art Of Living Retreat Center  wind up in Boone North Carolina?
The foundation was looking for the ideal place and structure to offer Art of Living Programs that incorporated rooms for overnight stays, a dining facility for healthy vegetarian food, organic gardens, and program space.  The mountains, fresh air, 300 acres, 35 buildings, were a perfect location to develop our concept.

Is your focus on single consumer visits or do you focus on groups or both?

We focus on groups led by regional teachers and programs by well known presenters, both of these attract large groups.  Our Art of Living Programs, Spa Packages, and Ayurveda Cleanses focus on individuals.
What is the number one treatment service offered?
Our Abhyanga, traditional detoxifying warm oil massage is one of our most popular and recommended therapies at Shankara Ayurveda Spa.  This therapy incorporates warm, aromatic oils, that are rhythmically massaged into your body, which loosen toxins, relax the nervous system, and provide rest, nourishment, and rejuvenation.

On your website you suggest, Choose A Journey. Which Journey is most requested?

Journeys that focus on teaching a guest a technique or knowledge that they can take home and easily implement into their daily routine to radically and sustainably improve their health and happiness.  The Happiness Program and the Ayurveda Program that focuses on resetting the digestive system to bring the body and mind back into balance are the most popular journeys at the Center today.

Can you share some of your founders vision for , The Art of Living Retreat Center?
